About

No. 1 from Trowell's Two Heine Songs, Op. 50 (see also 'Mädchen mit dem roten Mündchen’), 'Nacht leigt auf den fremden Wegen' ('On the Silent Highway') is based on poetry by the 19th Century German poet Heinrich Heine, and dedicated to Madame Blanche Marchesi (1863–1940), a French mezzo-soprano with whom Trowell gave several concerts. Trowell gave a volume of Heine poetry to Katherine Mansfield.
