It was a real pleasure to compose Suite per antiche archi for this wonderful trio. I found the viola d’amore to be an especially fascinating instrument. This piece is in three movements beginning with Arhythmia which is a reference to the fragile state of my heart some time ago. The Cavatina is based around a repeating bass pattern somewhat like a Passacaglia and explores themes of vulnerability. The third movement Fugue, the largest of the three is primarily based on a “fugal” subject but meanders freely into other areas with a strict fugue occurring only towards the end.
