About
Written during a prolonged stay in Bavaria during the second half of 1909, the poems chosen for this song cycle form a narrative arc that traces multiple themes — love and death, the natural world, childhood innocence and the faery, music and song — that preoccupied Mansfield throughout her writing life, moving away from fin-de-siecle symbolism towards the neo-romanticism and early modernism of continental Europe.
