About
The night is shattered was commissioned by the New Zealand Chamber Soloists in 2021, for its 7x7 project of music by NZ women composers. It is written for the NZCS, and dedicated to the memory of my husband Ken.
The title is taken from a translation of the Pablo Neruda poem Poem 20, in his collection Twenty Love Poems and a Song of Despair ("Veinte poemas de amor y una cancion desesperada").
Several phrases from the poem are intoned in the work.
Tonight I can write the saddest lines. Write, for example,
“The night is starry and the blue stars shiver in the distance.”
The night wind revolves in the sky and sings.
Love is so short, forgetting is so long.
