The poem was written by Dunedin poet Leonora Smith. She was born in Salisbury and grew up there. During her childhood, she would escape her abusive environment to seek the quiet solitude along the riverbank walks. In this poem she recalls her feelings of awe upon observing (from behind a bush) a large white swan. The poem was set to music by composer Andrew Perkins for four-part female choir and piano, and also exists in a setting for SATB choir and piano.
