About
Each of the five pieces focuses on a limited set of materials.
I. Lattice (Up/Down)
A web of ascending/descending scales and interval cycles: fifths, fourths, major and minor thirds, major seconds, and the octatonic scale.
II. Earth and Stars (Left/Right)
The hands play at opposite ends of the keyboard, slowly moving through a twelve-tone row (and its inversion) at different speeds.
III. Labyrinth (Backwards/Forwards)
The hands quickly alternate back and forth, while traversing a maze of repeats.
IV. Anchor (Still)
The hands are fixed in place in the middle of the keyboard, stubbornly hammering out a loud cluster of ten notes, which are strategically filtered away.
V. Epilogue (Entropy)
Fragments of the preceding pieces are played in a scrambled, flexible form, becoming sparser with each page.
The first four pieces can be played individually, but the fifth piece should only be played with the complete set.
'In All Directions' was a Recommended Work at the 2022 Mauricio Kagel Composition Competition at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna.
