About
Trees have always been some of my favourite things, finding their way into nearly every doodle I made growing up. In one of the most intense times in my life, I was surrounded by trees. Autumn leaves crackling overhead and underfoot, standing serene like living sculptures. I learned just how beautifully leaves can let go, drifting down silently to meet the earth. In that time it struck me so forcibly the irony of the cross: how such beauty could be used for such horror; how on a tree the Creator was betrayed by His own Creation. That's what this piece is about - beauty, grief, and the most intense expression of love.
"For greater love has no one than this: to lay down one's life for one's friends."
— John 15:13
