This is Chris Artley's second setting of 'Ave Maria' and was written especially for the 2021 Weiger Lepke Sims Sacred Music Competition, in which it was awarded the sole 'Honourable Mention'. It features a small, but varied ensemble of three upper voices, flute and harp. In addition to complimenting one another very well, this instrumentation allows for a good range of timbral variety, with the harp taking in the role of accompanist for the most part.
Beautiful melody and harmony are key features of the piece, together with a number of unexpected metre changes thrown into the mix. The piece starts in 3/4 time, but has a number of brief visits to 2/4 and 4/4 along the way. The work is intended to be within reach of good amateur musicians, but also to be of interest to professionals too. The vocal parts may either be sung by soloists, or by an upper voice choir. The traditional 'Ave Maria' text lends itself to performance at a wide range of occasions.
