Ubi Caritas was the winner of the 2020 Eastern Michigan University Composition Competition. It is a hauntingly beautiful setting for SATB choir of this traditional Latin text. The work keeps to 4 parts throughout, uses a mix of traditional and more jazzy harmony and has a strong focus on voice leading. All parts are intended to be very singable, with care taken to let the music sit well in each voice’s register. Influences on this work would include composers such as Morten Lauridsen, Ola Gjeilo, Eric Esenvalds, Will Todd and John Rutter. Ubi Caritas received its world premiere performance at Bowling Green, Ohio, given by the Eastern Michigan University Choir directed by Brandon Johnson in February 2020. The New Zealand premiere was given by The Graduate Choir New Zealand under the direction of Terence Maskell, in Auckland in November 2020.

Text note

"Ubi caritas" or "Ubi Caritas et Amor" is a hymn of the Western Church, long used as one of the antiphons for the washing of feet on Maundy Thursday. Its text is attributed to Paulinus of Aquileia in 796.
