About
Kia Kaha Tamariki was commissioned by The Sinfonia of Hope for its annual fundraising concert in Porirua, Wellington, November 24, 2019. The concert was designed to raise money for a children's primary school, Tamariki Education Centre, in Nairobi, Africa. This piece brings together influences from African and Maori music, featuring instruments such as the mbira and djembe along with koauau. These instruments are backed by a large cello ensemble (there were over 40 players in the premiere!) in seven parts, along with solo violin and cello parts. The cello parts are designed to range in technical ability, from part 1 for professionals through to part 7 for relatively new cellists. The piece is in three parts, with the quick outer sections being dance-like in character, contrasting with a soulful, atmospheric middle section.
