About
Summer Rose for piano solo was composed in late June 2018 as a 40th birthday offering to my friend and fellow lecturer at Sias University, Debbie Haile. The title has a three-fold reference: firstly, in homage to the dedicatee’s English origins (the rose being England’s national flower); secondly as a way of acknowledging that Debbie’s birthday falls in mid-summer, and lastly in honour of the profusion of roses blooming around the Sias campus and Xinzheng at the time I wrote the piece.
Summer Rose is the eleventh of a series of 12 pieces for piano, One Day in Spring. In this set of pieces my focus is primarily on the beauty of the melodic line, while exploring a variety of approaches to the questions of form and tonality. Many of the pieces are programmatic, acting as markers of people and events in the composer’s life between the months of March and June, 2018.
