About

New Year’s Suite for clavichord was composed between 31 December 2018 and 2 January 2019 in Xinzheng, Henan, China. It is dedicated to David Bohn. The piece is the third work written for this performer, the others being Serene Song for clavichord (2017), composed for the Daniel Blitz Clavichord Project, and Earth Resonance for toy piano (2018), written for the 100-Note Toy Piano Project. Like these earlier pieces, the current work also utilises musical ideas where 100 notes feature. Each of movements 1 to 5 is formed from 100 notes in total, while movement 6, Toccata Finale, also utilises 100 notes in its construction with an initial phrase repeated and varied before the piece concludes with three broken chords. Stylistically the piece ranges from the freely chromatic language of the first four movements to the neo-baroque figurations of no. 5 and the finale’s moto perpetuo inspired by the language of minimalist composers such as Philip Glass.
