About
My Concerto for Piano and Strings was written over sixty years ago in London. It was first performed at a concert given by the NZ Music Society in the Arts Council Rooms at 4 St James Square, London, on 9 May 1958. The pianist was Ashley Lawrence and the Classicum String Orchestra conducted by Peter Zwartz.
An ink score of the piece was in the possession of Ashley Lawrence who died some years ago. It was only last year that I found a pencil score of the piece together with a tape recording I had made of that performance. I have now put the score onto the Sibelius computer programme.
The performance was, in a way, historic. The pianist, Ashley Lawrence, went on to become music director of the Royal Ballet. The conductor, Peter Zwartz, was studying conducting at the Royal Academy of Music and many years later we met again, at Peter’s instigation, to talk about the possibility of publishing New Zealand music! It was as a result of this meeting that some years later we got together to establish Price Milburn Music.
