About
This trio was conceived of on behalf of all teenaged chamber musicians who find themselves in a group of two violins and piano, with little choice of repertoire. It was written as part of the Composer-in-Residence position at Marsden Collegiate School, following the initiative and suggestion of Helene Pohl.
'The violin and piano are respectively my primary and second instruments, so I thought it would be very easy to write this piece – I was wrong! It seemed like all the material automatically became a duo for a violin-pair and a piano. In the end, I used the ideas of a 'solo instrument' made up of three, and a 'duo' between the same three, to get me going. The material rather got away from me, so the movement titles are in quotation marks, as they are no longer entirely accurate.
The first movement is built on a 'NORIS' (Non Octave Repeating Interval Set – appropriately, a tool I invented while studying post-tonal theory under Michael Norris). The second movement is based on fugal form, written in 'directionally altered scales': another of these musical tools of mine which are still in the development process. The third movement is a mixture of free-form play and more NORIS experimentation.'
