About
The Whakarnewarewa Forest (Redwood Forest) in Rotorua is home to tens of thousands of Californian Coast Redwoods, among many other species of trees. Planted in the early 20th Century, these exotic trees create a big canopy, sheltering the ferns and shrubs of the forest floor.
When considering what I might write for the 2018 NZSO NYO, I was walking and biking through this forest, and found myself drawing parallels between orchestra forces and the forest; considering the many layers within the forest and how these trees have slowly grown over time, becoming the towering canopy they are today. Just as they have grown gradually with time, so does this piece - slowly unfolding from a short fragment into something much larger in scale.
