About

Plates in Collision was composed for violist Mark Menzies and percussionist Justin de Hart to perform at the CANZ Conference "Composing on Shifting Ground" at the end of April 2017. The conference was held in Christchurch, which has been directly affected since 2010 by two major earthquakes and many aftershocks resulting from slippage stresses on the boundary between the Australian and Pacific tectonic plates.

The two musical layers are notated in regular semiquavers, but the players are instructed to "roam freely, improvise using any fragments in any order, beginning with the first bar and ending with the last. Have a wild interaction." They will be constantly in friction but bound closely together much of the time.
