About

These five short pieces are specially composed for the Nelson Symphony Orchestra 50th Anniversary.

Each piece is based on a short evocative poem written by the composer. The poems containing Nelsonian images are modelled on the Japanese literary form the 'haiku'.

  1. Sacred Dawn - before the sun, a hint of specked chant.

  2. Tidal Surge - the tide rises and surges over the cycle track

  3. Dancing Trees - buffeted, the trees dance a thousand steps

  4. Astrolabe - calm the roadstead, a distant hornpipe approaches

  5. Reefs and Riffs - the sea swirls over the reefs glimpsing a joyful song
