About

The song cycle begins with a brief piano prelude that is repeated at the end as an epilogue. It is simple and direct in its expression – setting the tone for the no-nonsense honesty and rigorous clarity of the poems.

The composer's intention in setting the poetry to music is for the performers to create the world of the poems for themselves and for their listeners. The music exists in order to communicate the words. A successful performance will be one where the music enhances and intensifies the experience of the poems.
