About

Iridescent Shells is a recomposition for piano trio of a short piece Flashes of Iridescence for piano solo.

The piano piece is a birthday offering for Douglas Lilburn’s 80th birthday and is based on a fragment of Lilburn’s Sonatina 2. For his piece Lilburn drew inspiration from the interior colours of the New Zealand paua shell which in a letter to the pianist Barry Margan, he described as ‘flashes of iridescence’.

Performance history

13 Nov 2015: Performed by Martin Riseley (violin), Inbal Megiddo (cello) and Jian Liu (piano) at the Remembering Lilburn concert, Adam Concert Room, Te Kōkī New Zealand School of Music, Wellington.
