About
When I was approached by Christine Argyle, the conductor of Nota Bene choir, for a work for the choir’s 10th anniversary, one of the themes suggested was that of music. I came across this poem by Spanish poet Juan Ramón Jiménez in an English translation, and was struck by the recurring references to singing. On finding the original Spanish language version, the constant use of the word 'cantan' seemed ideally suited to a choral sound. Canción de Invierno ('Winter Song') creates a trilogy of Jiménez choral settings from 2014, following on from The Bridge of Love and Luz Última.
