About
St Paul's Evening Service was written for the Choir of Wellington Cathedral of St Paul as part of the 2006–08 Composer-in-Residency, and is my first major work combing organ and choir. The piece is inspired by and dedicated to Herbet Howells (1892–1983), a composer who, in my mind, possessed the profound ability to draw an audience into his music, to experience beauty, sadness, and tranquility. St Paul's Evening Service is largely a 'reflexive' set of canticles, drawing on stylistic features of Howells himself, mixed with my own style of writing.
