About
This is the fourth work written for the Estrella Quartet, a group of four pianists specialising in music for 8eight hands on two pianos. I was keen here to write something with a small music-theatre element to it, and something that they could have a bit of fun with. And at the same time, it is a work that plays with the idea of technology impacting on performances - specifically the ubiquitous mobile phone!
The piece begins softly, but soon breaks into more insistent rhythmic writing which persists until nearly the end. Much use is made of repetitive ideas, and the work is broadly tonal in its harmonic language.
The music which is quoted briefly in the course of the work, and more fully at the end, is the Minuet from Beethoven’s Septet Op.20. This work was on the programme (in a version for eight hands) of the first concert featuring my Tui, the first work written for them in 2010.
