About

This piece was inspired by a trip to Hauturu (Little Barrier Island, which gave me a glimpse of the paradise Aotearoa was before the native flora and fauna were devastated by mammalian predators. The 'Equinox' theme of the concert (for which this piece was written)coupled with the Maori creation myth of Rangi and Papa provided the idea for the work's structure: a gradual separation occurs between the two parts (voice and recorder) as they move from darkness to light.

Commissioned note

Commissioned by Auckland Composer collective The Committee, for 'Equinox', a concert of new and recent works by Auckland composers, at University of Auckland Clock Tower

Dedication note

for Claire Scholes and Kevin Kim

Contents note

Two continuous movements: 'dark' and 'light'
