About
Chance Piece for Flute and Tape is a variation of Chance Piece for Oboe and Tape.
For my 70th birthday (02/12/07) I was given a concert by the ICST (Institute for Computer Music and Sound technology) in the “kleiner Saal” of the Zürich Conservatory.
For this celebration I asked for a performance of my Piece of 4 which I had written in 1981 for Gerald Bennett and the group of students he took to Bourges. Piece of 4 uses found instruments and a complicated chance system to play them. After the performance I decided to make a piece for oboe (later arranged for saxophone and now for flute) accompanied by sounds from a recording of the performance.
The chance processes used in the composition are used only for the solo part. The tape sounds were arranged afterwards to fit in—these sounds were after all created from the chance systems of Piece of 4.
The choice of instrument for the solo part is left to the performer. I favour one of the deeper flutes, especially since these are better for producing the “slapped” sounds required in the piece. If possible the flautist should use a microphone so that the recorded sounds be played as loud as possible.
