About

It was a reference to Irish poet Seamus Heaney as 'the green man' in a review of his work that set me thinking about this forest spirit. The Green Man's face, often carved in stone or wood, may sprout branches or vines from parts of the face, and is frequently found in ecclesiastical and secular buildings. The Green Man is usually interpreted as sybolising rebirth because of the cycle of regrowth being reborn each spring. While found in many parts of the world, The Green Man Dances draws on the Celtic Green Man's surroundings through use of several harmonic and metric associations. It was written (in Turramurra) to be played with Michael Hannan and we premiered it at conerts of our piano works (composers playing) held at Killara, Sydney and Nimbin in November 2006. The piece is dedicated to Michael Hannan.
