About

Two Bells is second piece I have written inspired by the Japanese classical musical drama style - Noh. With its austere gestures and unusual delineation of time, Noh provided the initial inspiration for this piece.

Upon preparation for a Noh drama, the performers never rehearse together. Each musican and actor prepares their individual part alone. This enables the eventual performance to note be controlled by a single performer, but alternatively by the interactions of the whole ensemble. The representation of time in Noh production is frequently non-linear, with the plot alternating between numerous different time frames.
