About

This work was written in honour of Father Pierre Chanel, a French Roman Catholic missionary who was murdered by natives on the island of Futuna in 1840. His remains were taken to New Zealand, where they lay for seven years in the care of his fellow priests at Pompallier House, Russell, before being transferred to Australia and then to France. He was cannonized in 1954 as Saint Peter Chanel, and his shrine at Russell is now a place of pilgrimage.
