About

My studies in Classics and Theology have given me a huge store of material to work from. These short piano studies begin to explore the wealth of inspiration that lies within ancient western culture.

Study One uses the Classical Greek Rhythm Alcaic, (early 6th century BC), one of two (the other one being Saphic), that have had an enormous influence on Western poetry through the ages, beginning with the Latin Verse of Horace and re-emerging in French and English verse in the Renaissance and 19th century.

Study Two is an octave exploration of the first three notes of the Latin Plainchant Ubi Caritas, which was created more than 1000 years ago.

Study Three experiments with bi-modal runs and clusters created through an alternating F and F sharp.

Three Studies on Ancient Idioms was slightly modified in 2009.
