The text for this song is based on a story told to Elena Poletti in 1999 by Nola Leov, about the sinking of the ferry, the Wahine, in Wellington harbour in 1968. When the order to abandon ship was given some Maori men formed a human chain to help pass people along to the lifeboats, and they sang as they did this, to keep people's spirits up. The poem and music captures the sense of bravery and determination from this situation.
