About
This short anthem was written at the request of Wellington Cathedral of St Paul for use at its 2004 ANZAC Day service. Although the choice of text was left up to me, I was drawn back to the well-known words from For the Fallen by Laurence Binyon (1869-1943). The stanza which begins 'They shall grow not old' is widely known and almost universally used at ANZAC Day commemorations. What is less well-known is that it is merely the 4th stanza of seven. For this setting I choose to include the 6 lines which immediately precede the 4th stanza. These make references to music ('There is music in the midst of desolation...'), and also to the sacrifice of those who fought and died.
