About

New Year Fanfare attempts to capture the spirit of a New Year's Eve spent in Yogyakarta, Java. The main street "Jalan Malioboro" was thronging with jubilant crowds blowing countless varieties of hooters ingeniously created from recycled junk. The sounds of these hooters, transformed, and the influence of Indonesian gamelan are striking in this extrovert piece.

New Year Fanfare was composed for the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra while I was their resident composer in 1994.

– Helen Bowater
