About

Flashes of Iridescence was composed in 1995 and first performed by the New Zealand pianist Margaret Lion at Morley College, London on 14 November 1995.

This short piece is a birthday offering for Douglas Lilburn’s 80th birthday and is based on a fragment of Lilburn’s Sonatina 2. For his piece, Lilburn drew inspiration from the interior colours of the New Zealand paua shell which in a letter to the pianist Barry Margan, he described as ‘flashes of iridescence’.
