About

For piano, organ, harp, harpsichord and two speakers, Turtle Time was completed in 1968 and introduced by the NZBC at the International Rostrum of Composers at UNESCO, Paris, in 1969. The text, which is by Russell Haley of Auckland, is a strange, highly personal poem which draws together various experiences pertaining to death and the sinister nature of time. The music is basically an experiment in timbres and is structured around the poem's dichotomies of light/darkness and ecstasy/fear. "Timelessness" is reflected in static clusters of sound and in free, non-metrical rhythms.
