About

In March and April of 1986 while observing Halley's Comet, I marvelled at the cosmos with its interplay of constellations as they appeared to move through the night. It seemed as if the stars and planets were celebrating some joyous event with a vigorous dance. Instinctively I thought of the timeless plainsong hymn 'Ave Maris Stella'. Consequently I used a version of this hymn as the melodic basis of Cosmic Dances.

The work was commissioned by the First International Recorder Festival in Auckland, New Zealand and first performed by one hundred and twenty enthusiastic recorder players in May 1986 conducted by David Coomber.
