"This album evokes a period when the world was ushered into an era of regulated isolation. As a musician, I embraced this phase as an opportunity to refelect on artistic identity, the intimate connection with one's instrument, and a profound exploration of conceptual abstraction through musical storytelling. This experience motivated me to record a collection of short solo compositions for the cello spanning from a century ago to the present day. The program showcases diverse expressions from various continents. The selected works aim to represent a fragmented depiction of the transition from late romantic into postmodern musical language." - Matthias Balzat

Perhaps a shade less whimsical than its unique cover might suggest, this solo album launches the recording career of an outstanding young New Zealand cellist. Matthias Balzat is now primarily based in Europe but continues his strong commitment to regular performances in Aotearoa.
