Martin Lodge grew up in Tauranga where, in a busy household, his mother played the piano. A puriri tree in the neighbouring section was full of birds, their songs an early acoustical memory. He moved to Wellington to study with the diverse personalities of Douglas Lilburn, David Farquhar and Ross Harris at Victoria University and would become an authority on the life and music of Anthony Watson.
Later, meeting Richard Nunns led to work with taonga puoro and Martin’s Ahunga is used as a musical example in this interview.
The Baby Boomer Composer interview series is the brainchild of Donald Maurice and was produced in partnership with the New Zealand School of Music.
