About

In November 2017 we sat down with Rob at his then home, Douglas Lilburn’s former home in Thorndon (Rob was the 2017-18 Creative New Zealand/Jack C. Richards Composer-in-Residence at the New Zealand School of Music) for a wide-ranging talk about life and music. In this first of ten parts Rob introduces himself, and talks of his childhood spent in a number of different parts of Aotearoa (his father was a teacher in rural areas), singing while a passenger on the back of his Mum’s bike, learning the trumpet and, later, going to Massey University to study social work and becoming immersed in the free noise community centered on Palmerston North’s The Stomach.

Filmed and edited by Chris Watson for the Resound Project (funded by NZ On Air).
