James Gardner ponders in this Resound film how the Observer Effect (as embodied by the very preparation of his talk) might impact on the process and outcome of his work 'torc' for alto trombone and violin. He strips back the popular trope of musical works arriving in their finished states in polished form, in denial of the struggles that inevitably preceded their outing on the concert stage. James notes that Morton Feldman once said, "The whole idea is not to write a good piece […] the whole idea is to get lost and then come out. Come out of it alive.”
