Eckehard Stier - conductor Sally-Anne Russell - mezzo-soprano Madeleine Pierard - soprano
Programme: Ross Harris - Symphony No. 5 Mahler - Symphony No. 4
The two symphonies on tonight’s programme are inspired by a childhood perspective, and each incorporates vocal parts that reflect the inspiration from which the work developed.
APO Music Director Eckehard Stier leads the orchestra through these emotional and uplifting works of the present and past. We are proud to present the world premiere of New Zealand composer Ross Harris’s latest Symphony, No.5. It uses poems by Hungarian Poet Panni Palasti, based on her experiences as a child in Budapest in 1944
Paired with Harris’s work is Mahler’s buoyant and immensely joyful Fourth Symphony, built around his song ‘Das himmlische Leben’, which imagines a child’s vision of Heaven, and which features talented soprano Madeleine Pierard.
