This recital from the Graduate Choir, directed by Terence Maskell, is essentially a musical journey from the death of Christ until the Resurrection. Holy Saturday is widely regarded as the lowest point of the Church’s calendar and there is a body of music, not often heard, that causes us to reflect upon the sombre darkness of Christ’s death through to the lighting of the candle and the promise of Light through the Resurrection.
The recital features the celebrated Miserere (Psalm 51) by Allegri with its unique solo interludes, the moving and seldom-heard Nunc Dimittis by Holst, two versions of Lux Aeterna by New Zealand composers Hamilton and Oswin, the wonderful Bring Us, O Lord God by Harris, the serene Requiem Aeternam by Walford Davies... and much more.
