Biography

Gerard Malcolm Crotty was born in Te Awamutu on the 6/6/58 and died in Auckland on the 26/8/88.

He was educated at Korakonui Primary School, Sacred Heart College, Auckland (1972-5) and Loretto Hall Catholic Training College (1978-80). As a Marist Brother he served in Mirimar, Wellington and Auckland and taught in Intermediate and Secondary Schools. In 1983 he served as assistant to JE Weir, and took his final vows. He worked as a church organist 1974-82 and gained his ATCL. He attended Victoria University of Wellington (Senior Scholar) achieving a BMus (1986). He was composer-in-residence of the Wellington Youth Orchestra in 1983 and 1985 became Director of Music at the Catholic Cathedral, Wellington. He was Music Director of Youth Liturgy for the Papal visit of 1986 and winner of the Wellington City Council Music Award in 1984 and 1985.
